Richardson and Matusevich in Grade 4 Finals in Notts

There will be no repeat champions this week at the ITF Juniors Grade 4 event in Nottingham this week, as top seed Aidan McHugh joined fellow last week’s champion Nell Miller in the exit pile, while the Girls’ and Boys’ finals have a Brit apiece in Eden Richardson and Anton Matusevich.

A McHugh-Matusevich final, which we predicted at the quarter-final stage, was still a possibly before today’s semi-finals, with McHugh getting the better of eighth seeded Austrian Neil Oberleitner and Matusevich battling past British second seed Matthew Summers 4-6 6-2 7-6(6) in a real humdinger. As predicted, Matusevich eased past fellow Brit Harry Butler 6-4 6-0 to reach the final today, but McHugh was held up by Dutch fourth seed Ryan Nijboer, with the Netherlands youngster claiming a 6-3 7-5 victory to end McHugh’s ten-match winning streak.

In the Girls’ draw, Eden Richardson will have her work cut out in the final against Norwegian thirteen-year-old wildcard Clara Tauson. The Brit defeated both 10th seed Maria Budin and 11th seed Olivia Elliott in straight sets to ensure a Brit would make the final, but Tauson put an end to Swede Alexandra Viktorovitch’s staggering run which had seen her defeat Brits Miller, Ellie-Rose Griffiths and ninth seed Anna Loughlan in the quarter-final. Tauson, however, was unfazed, and defeated the Swede 6-2 6-4 to set up a final against top seed Richardson.

The finals take place tomorrow, and we wish both young Brits the best of luck against their tricky opponents.
