Alexis Canter, Alastair Gray and Jodie Anna Burrage all progressed to the next round of their respective ITF Futures Grade 2 events earlier today, while the last remaining Brit at the Grade 4 event in Israel, Barnaby Smith, was defeated.
Canter is taking part in the Grade 2 event in Medias, Romania this week, and is the top seed. Today he produced a 6-3 6-3 victory against Slovakian Martin Fekiac to delve further into dangerous territory – the quarter-finals. Romania currently has a strong crop of youngsters, including Canter’s next opponent – Daniel Cozma, who defeated Alastair Gray at last week’s Grade 2 event in Bulgaria before reaching the semi-finals. Canter will need to be aware of the dangers the young Romanian presents if he’s to safely reach the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, at the event in Italy, both Alastair Gray and Jodie Anna Burrage secured victories, with Gray through to the quarter-finals and Burrage through to the semis. Burrage, who is unseeded at the event, took out eighth seed Lucrezia Stefanini of Italy 6-3 6-4 to reach the semis, where she will play another Italian, Lisa Piccinetti. Gray, meanwhile, split two sets between himself and ninth seeded Hungarian Akos Kotorman before the young Hungarian was forced to retire, allowing Gray safe passage through to the quarter-finals, where he’ll play 16th seeded Italian Andrea Guerrieri.
At the Grade 4 in Israel, Barnaby Smith’s exertions came to an unfortunate end. The third seeded Brit split two tiebreaks with Israeli Roi Ginat before being forced to retire trailing 2-0 in the deciding set.
